What is Textile Yarn?

Textile yarns refer to the textile fibers that twist together intending to produce a single continuous strand. These yarns have the most valuable influence on the final product of the fabric using the spinning process.

There is also the use of weaving and knitting techniques. They are thread-like materials that spin together to form new fabric works. Besides, making different types of yarn depends on the fiber and filament source. Yarns are available both naturally and synthetically. If you want to get the desired technique from yarn’s qualities, you must get an overview of the various activities of yarn used.

3 Different Types of Yarn Names in Textile

Kinds of Yarn in Textile

In the Textile Industry, yarns get classified based on the structure and process. There are in total 3 different types of yarn if we name them as a list. For instance:

  1. Spun Yarn
  2. Ply Yarn
  3. Filament Yarn

1. Spun Yarn

Yarns that are short yet staple fibers, made of natural materials, twisted together are called staple fiber yarns. In most cases, long filament yarn gets cut down to shape like a staple fiber yarn size.

2. Ply Yarn

Ply yarns refer to a single yarn, made of different stranded staple fiber yarn, twisted from the opposite direction. Plies are the number of strands in simple terms. A single-ply yarn means a single staple fiber is the main component. These yarns provide your fabric great strength to keep up the surface effect.

In most cases, these ply yarns tend to show the subcategory of Spun yarns. Ply yarns are also categorized into 2 kinds. Such as:

1) Single-Ply Yarn: The staple or spun yarn that has only 1 ply.

2) Multi-Ply Yarn: the staple of spun yarn that has more than 1 ply twisted together to form.

3. Filament Yarn

Filament yarns of textiles are more than 1 strand-related filament which shows the entire length of the yarn. An example of natural filament yarn is none other than Silk. But most filament yarns tend to be synthetically produced using the method of chemical or mechanical.

Another 3 Different Kinds of Yarn Twist in Textile

In textiles, the direction of the twist shows the yarn property, which is an important feature. The direction denotes either the right or the left twist. There are in total 2 different types of yarn twists named S-Twist and Z-Twist. Also, there is another type named zero twists or less twisted yarn. Descriptions of each twist are as follows:

S Twist vs Z Twist
S Twist vs Z Twist

a) S-Twist Yarn in Textile: Here, fibers remain from an angle named helical at the surface of the yarn. Yarns stay twisted in a direction of anti-clockwise. Also, the angle depicts the letter S in the middle part.

b) Z-Twist Yarn in Textile: Here, like the S-twist, fibers from the helical angle are shaped like the letter Z at the surface of the yarn. At that time, the yarn gets twisted in the direction clockwise.

c) Zero-Twist/ Twist Less Yarn in Textile: This is another different kind of yarn twist based on the direction. Here, the yarn remains in a wrapped making where there is a mixture of soluble filament and staple fibers, untwisted.

3 Different Kinds of Yarn Based on the Twist Degrees

Based on the degree of twist a yarn gets, there are 3 categories of classification. They are:

1. Low Twist Yarn

Here, the kind of yarn has less twist degree compared to the standard one. It provides you with a soft feel. It possesses enough bulky features. You get them in a less strong shape compared to the yarn type with a normal twist. That is what makes the yarn coarser.

2. Normal Twist Yarn

Any kind of yarn that consists of a normal ranged twist like the spinning and specification norms is popularly known as normal twist yarn.

3. High Twist Yarn

A yarn that has a high degree of twist. It provides you with a rough feel where the fabric texture clarity also remains at an increased level. You get them in a better luster situation when you compare them with the normal twisted yarn ones.
