3 Key Benefits of the Use of ICT in Textile Production Phase for Enhanced Efficiency

Use of ICT in Textile Production Phase: There are three main phases to the creation of commercial textile products. ICT is used in all of these phases.

1. Pre-Production

Research topic using ICT software.

Develop a series of designs using vector drawing graphics software

Design fabrics using a CAD package.

Arranging a garment specification.

Model fabric on a product using 2D mapping or 3D image draping system.

Present ideas using graphic packages, PowerPoint presentations or using mood boards.

2. Production Phase

Testing on the product.

3D image can be generated via a flat 2D pattern and mapped on a computer avatar.

Costings and manufacturing specifications are generated using PDM (Product Data Management) software.  These systems are used to track materials and components for manufacturing.

Lay Plans are produced with a software package. This can calculate the best way of laying pattern pieces on  the fabric, minimising the waste.

Fabrics are cut out accurately using computer-controlled cutting tables.

• Post-Production

Sales or marketing involves a virtual design system, which shows how the product can be displayed on in stores.

With a computerised barcode system, a garment can be tracked at any retail outlet. When launching the product, it can be viewed on the web and a virtual fashion show can be arranged. Using online retailing to sell the products online.
