Satin or sateen weave is the 3rd basic weave which is similar to weave but uses 5-12 harness and its diagonal is not visible. There is a common confusion satin vs sateen. You may notice in following weaving plan:

Satin vs Sateen
Satin vs Sateen

In this content we will differentiate the common characteristics which separate both of satin and sateen.

Satin vs Sateen Table

Satin weaveSateen weave
i) Satin is warp faced fabric.i) Sateen is weft faced fabric.
ii) Ends per inch is more than picks per inch in satin fabric.ii)  Picks per inch is more than ends per inch in sateen fabric
iii) It is woven with superior quality warp yarn.iii) It is woven with superior quality Weft yarn.
iv) The weaving cost of satin is lower than sateen fabric.iv) The weaving cost of sateen fabric Higher than satin fabric.
v) The broken ends (unrepairable weaving defect) many time appear on the face side. This drawback of satin fabric does not allow an user to making the garments of satin fabric.v) Normally, sateen fabric does not Has broken picks in it. This Characteristic of sateen fabric allows An user to make the garments of it.
vi) Due to higher ends per inch, warp breakages rate in satin is more than sateen. This breakage reflects in the    form of fabric defect and does not allow an user to make the garments of satin fabric.vi) since the sateen fabric has picks per Inch (PPI) greater than ends per inch (EPI), this characteristic helps to reduce warp breakage rate during weaving. Thus better fabric quality results. This better fabric quality of sateen allows an user to make garments of sateen.
vii) The ends are very closed to each other in the satin fabric due to high ends per inch. These ends get rubbed to each other during shedding in weaving. This end to end rubbing generate hairiness in the fabric. This  hairiness causes pilling in the fabric. This drawback does not allow an user to make the garments of satin.vii) The end to end rubbing during Weaving is less than satin due to low Ends per inch. Thus chances to generate hairiness in the fabric are reduced. Thus the pilling property results better in the fabric. This characteristic also allows an user to make garments of sateen fabric.
viii) The control of weft wise shrinkage after washing is easy in processing. The control of warp wise shrinkage after washing is always an issue during processing. There is more warp wise shrinkage after washing in satin fabric due to less picks per inch (much pick to pick air space). This characteristic of the fabric does not allows an user to make garments of satin fabric.viii) There is less warp wise shrinkage After washing in sateen fabric than satin fabric due to high picks per inch (low pick to pick air space). This Characteristic allows an user to make the garments of sateen fabric.
